ILOILO – Tonight, the provincial capitol will transform into a magical Christmas destination, offering everyone a chance to experience the fun, food and friendly atmosphere of Iloilo. “We aim to make it a family destination; we want it to be fun, foodie-friendly, and welcoming to families during Christmas here at Barangay Kapitolyo,” said Gov. Arthur Defensor Jr.
A lantern parade is scheduled to start at 5 p.m. from the Iloilo Freedom Grandstand, proceeding along Muelle Loney Street, and culminating at the provincial capitol grounds. This will be followed by the lighting of the entire capitol building and grounds.
The eagerly anticipated grand fireworks display by Iloilo Supermart is set for 7:30 p.m.
Additionally, a street food night market will be available on the capitol grounds.
Alongside the lighting ceremony, Defensor will announce regulations regarding the daily schedule of holiday season events at the capitol and policies on ambulant vendors, among other aspects. These details are still under discussion with the General Services Office (GSO), led by Vicente B. Flores Jr.
Last week, the GSO revealed that Ilonggos could expect “something truly magical and extraordinary” as they transform the capitol into a winter wonderland.
Why a Family Destination?
The governor’s vision is to link the capitol’s Christmas lights theme with the newly introduced tourism slogan “Fun, Foodie, Friendly Iloilo.”
He explained that this slogan is versatile, encapsulating experiences that are “fun, foodie-friendly” with family, friends, and during festivals like Kasadyahan sa Kabanwahanan.
Further, the governor noted that the slogan reflects the characteristics of the Ilonggos, which translate into the enjoyment and satisfaction tourists feel when visiting Iloilo.
He highlighted the province’s 1,763 fiestas, 43 festivals, beautiful beaches, mountains, and various natural and historical sites as key factors contributing to the fun, thrill, and excitement experienced by visitors.
More than just scenery, culture, and festivities, Iloilo is renowned for its culinary diversity. The governor pointed out that Iloilo’s unique gastronomy and delectable dishes are sure to satisfy tourists’ cravings.
The slogan also represents the vision for tourism under the initiative “MoRProGRes Iloilo” (Movement for a Robust, Progressive, Globally Competitive, and Resilient Province of Iloilo)./PN
