MANILA â Magnolia Hotshots finally broke its slump in out-of-town games with a 94-65 victory over Meralco Bolts in the PBA Philippine Cup yesterday at the Xavier University gym in Cagayan de Oro City.
Paul Lee posted 21 points, including three 3-point conversions, while Ian Sangalang added 12 for Hotshots (8-3) to capture one of the two twice-to-beat incentives in the conference.
Bolts (4-7) bowed out of contention for the playoffs. Chris Newsome helped Meralco put up a fight with 13 points while Joseph Sedurifa chipped in with career-high 10 markers.
âFour-game losing skid na kami sa out-of-town games so ginawa lang namin para maka-get over the hump,â said Hotshots head coach Chito Victolero.
âThis is a very important win also since its solidified our chances doon sa top two,â he added.
From a tightly contested opening quarter, Hotshots started to pull away in the second frame with conversions from Lee, Marc Pingris and Sangalang for a 44-32 lead at the half.
Bolts made a run early in the third to trim the deficit to as low as 10 points but Hotshots relied on hot shooting from Lee and a basket by Riego Gamalinda to raise the lead 66-45.
Meralco made its last push in the final quarter but Lee kept it at bay with consecutive baskets as Hotshots headed to its largest lead in the match 94-63 on hits from Gryann Mendoza and Robbie Herndon./PN
