Magnolia manhandles Terrafirma in PBA

MANILA – Magnolia Chicken Timplados Hotshots vented its ire on Terrafirma Dyip with a 104-91 manhandling in the 2023 PBA Commissioner’s Cup last night at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Tyler Bey finished with 25 points, 12 rebounds, and seven assists, while Ian Sangalang posted a conference-high of 18 markers and nine rebounds as the Hotshots returned to their winning ways for an 8-1 record.

Paul Lee chipped in 16 markers, including five three-pointers, while Jiovani Jalalon contributed 13 points, six assists, five rebounds, and three steals for Magnolia, which bounced back from a 113-110 loss to Rain or Shine Elasto Painters last Saturday.

The Hotshots waxed hot early with Lee connecting three first quarter triples for a 29-16 lead. It grew further to 57-38 at the half behind inside conversions from Bey and Sangalang.

Magnolia’s advantage went up to as high as 31 points at 91-60 on three free throws by Aris Dionisio. Terrafirma managed to cut the deficit to 20 points in the fourth quarter, but baskets from Bey widened the Hotshots lead anew to 25.

Juan Miguel Tiongson finished with 17 points, Angelo Alolino and Stephen Holt added 13 and 12 points, respectively, while Javi Gomez de Liano and Thomas De Thaey had 11 each as the Dyip dropped to 2-6.

In the first game, Phoenix Super LPG Fuel Masters leaned on a fourth quarter breakaway to defeat NorthPort Batang Pier, 113-104. The Fuel Masters improved to 7-1, while the Batang Pier dropped to 5-4.

From a 95-all score midway through the final quarter, the Fuel Masters got nine consecutive points from Johnathan Williams III and Tyler Tio to establish a 104-95 advantage.

The Batang Pier attempted to come close behind Arvin Tolentino and Ilonggo Paul Zamar, but the Fuel Masters responded with shots from Kenneth Tuffin and Tio to secure the victory.

Williams finished with 38 points, 19 rebounds, and nine assists to lead the Fuel Masters, Tuffin chipped in 15 markers, while Tio and Larry Muyang contributed 14 and 10 markers, respectively./PN
