ILOILO City – Several major streets will be closed to traffic today, the 80th anniversary of Iloilo as a charter city.

There will be a grand parade and a street dance competition, among others.

The Sangguniang Panlungsod approved Regulation Ordinance No. 2017-130 temporarily closing to vehicular traffic (from Plaza Libertad) the whole stretch of JM Basa Street up to Plazoleta Gay, Iznart Street, Rizal Street from corner Rizal-Iznart streets and corner Riza-JM Basa streets, from 6 a.m. to 12 noon.

The city government will start the day with a mass at the San Jose de Placer Church in Plaza Libertad. This will be followed by a grand parade and street dancing.

In the “Sinadya sa Ciudad” choreographed street dance contest, participating groups will perform carousel-type in three judging – Freedom Grandstand on JM Basa Street, in front of Postal Bank on Iznart Street, and at corner Rizal-Ortiz streets, City Proper.

“I hope that while we make this 80th Charter Day celebration lively and enjoyable, this will also promote the spirit of camaraderie and sportsmanship among participants,” said Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog.

To ensure peace and order, the Iloilo City Police Office is banning backpacks, motorcycles, smoking, and littering on the parade route.

The street dance competition has three categories. Category A is for groups from the Department of Education Division of Iloilo City. Category B is for city hall employees while Category C is open to local government units, national government agencies, Association of Barangay Councils of the city’s seven districts, civic clubs, civil society organizations, business corporations, and private schools.

Participants will be given three minutes to perform. They are encouraged to introduce innovative costumes aligned with the celebration theme, “Celebrating 80 Years of Culture and Pride.”

Criteria for judging include choreography and synchronization – 40 percent; skills and mastery – 30 percent; and props and costumes, and music – 15 percent each.

Prizes for categories A, B and C are: P35,000 – first; P25,000 – second; and P15,000 – third; and two consolation prizes of P5,000 each.

Winners of special awards (best in choreography, music and costume) will receive P5,000 each./PN
