Make Dinangyang a product festival every year

WHEN Panay Electric Co. was the power supplier, whenever there is a brownout some people condemned the power company by calling it names like “Patay Electric Company”.

Now long brownouts are also happening with our new power supplier. We hope our consumers will not start to call it “No More Power Corporation”.

But there is a reason for it. It is “power maintenance”, we are told. We hope it is not everyday, especially that we will have the Dinagyang Festival coming up this January 2021.

We have written of this before but this early allow us to introduce the idea again. Since Dinagyang has now become a region-wide celebration for Western Visayas as sponsored by Iloilo City and the province of Iloilo – and with nationwide attendance and even from abroad – it will be a good opportunity to make it a product festival, and call on the districts of the city and the various towns of the province  to exhibit their products.

In other words, it will become also a “product festival” to introduce what we produce in Iloilo to other parts of the country, especially with the big influx of visitors that come to the festival every year.

So it will not be a case of all dancing and merrymaking every year alone; it will be, at the same time, a promotion for the city and province by exhibiting our products and delicacies to people who come from other parts of the country to witness the festival, including foreigners.

So we will not miss on this opportunity, this early product committees must be organized. Are we doing it?

Prizes not only for the best dancers or tribes but also for the best products and special prizes and recognition, especially for new products, so that people will be encouraged to produce and expand our cropping and manufacturing activities.

There will be good results from this because it can improve quality and even packaging so it can qualify for the export market, if possible.

We have a very poor promotion of our export products. Not only that, there is little trading done even within the country, and we have the bad habit of giving preference to the imported variety rather than the one which is locally produced.

Perhaps, a special committee to handle the promotion of local Ilonggo products can be formed to take advantage of organizing exhibits to the festival every year.

Are our producers listening and taking note of this idea?
