Making the right choice

THE PRESIDENTIAL and senatorial elections are looming ever closer, and people are on the edge of their seats.

Voters are wracking their brains trying to decide who to vote for, while some candidates are itching to start their campaign.

The people will be divided once again; word wars on the internet and protests will be rampant. Everyone is passionate about who they think the best presidential candidate is.

Now, I believe it is important to choose the president wisely, the mishap of this administration has made me realize that. However, we also need to choose carefully for the lower positions like senators and representatives.

The latest news is that Willie Revillame, Bong Revilla and Raffy Tulfo will be running for senator. These prospective candidates are absurd! Majority of the netizens are against the idea, so they probably don’t stand a chance, right?

The sad truth is, there is still a HUGE chance that these attention whores could steal the hearts of the masses. It may seem like enlightened Filipinos make up the majority of the voting body, but there are still a significant number of people who can be swayed by the charm and fame of these people. “Oh! Willie gave me P1,000 when I was a guest on Wowowee, so he’s definitely fit for drafting laws that could shape the future of the country!”

Don’t forget the die-hard DDS fans, too! President Duterte is supporting these candidates so naturally they should follow his words like a creed!

It’s nauseating to know that candidates like this are a huge risk for the country. You would think the problems we got from previous candidates who won sympathy and fame votes would teach us a lesson, but it seems we are doomed to continue the cycle.

These people are the ones who will draft the laws in our country. What do action stars and TV hosts know about this? Machismo can only take you so far in being an effective leader.

Our standards are so high for restaurants, beauty queens, celebrities, and even the common street peddler. Why can’t we direct this same pressure to our politicians; the ones who are supposed to keep our country afloat?

Why do we settle for mediocrity just because they have famous names?

I am compelling everyone, please try to think about who you are voting for and make the right choice./PN
