BORACAY – Those with illegal structures along beaches, sidewalks and roads right-of-way in this island resort should demolish them on their own, Malay mayor Ceciron Cawaling said.
On March 7 the local government is leading a “voluntary demolition” at the beaches in Manoc-manoc (proper), Tulubhan, Tambisaan, Cagban, and Malabunot in Barangay Manoc-manoc, and Puka in Barangay Yapak.
The clearing operations will include structures at the beaches in Kandingon, Diniwid, Ilig-iligan, Bulabog, and Balinghai in Barangay Balabag, and the White Beach.
“Operation Hawan” along beaches and roads in the island was included in the local government of Malay’s six-month action plan to solve environmental problems in Boracay.
“Ang boluntaryong demolisyon ay makakatulong para mapabilis ang paglilinis ng isla ng Boracay at maibalik natin ang angkin nitong ganda, alinsunod sa utos ng ating Pangulong Rodrigo Duterte sa loob na anim na buwan,” Cawaling said.
Duterte called Boracay a “cesspool,” citing its drainage and sewerage problems.
Malay presented the action plan to Boracay stakeholders on Feb. 27.
Other measures include the creation of environmental police teams, moratorium on building construction, closure of businesses without business permits, continuous opening of drainage canals, and close monitoring of ongoing drainage projects.
On March 2, the Senate Committee on Environment and Natural Resources conducted a public hearing in Boracay with regard to the environmental state of the island. (Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
