BORACAY – The local government unit (LGU) of Malay presented its six-month clean-up plan for this famed beach destination before stakeholders.

The plan presentation was held on Tuesday at the Boracay Ecovillage Convention Center. About 1,000 business owners, expatriates, residents, and local officials were present.

The action plan is the LGU’s response to President Rodrigo Duterte’s call to address the environmental problems in Boracay, which he called a “cesspool” on Feb. 9.

Part of the action plan was the moratorium on the construction of new buildings in the island.

The guidelines for the moratorium – which will be implemented from March to December this year – have yet to be finalized, said Executive Assistant to the Mayor Rowen Aguirre.

The LGU also vowed to continue demolishing illegal structures violating the 30-meter easement rule in the island.

According to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), at least 300 beachfront establishments are violating the easement rule.

Mayor Ceciron Cawaling said the LGU will also impose the 12-meter road setback instead of the 30-meter road setback under Presidential Proclamation 1064 in 2006.

The Sangguniang Bayan has approved a resolution amending the road setback rule, said Vice Mayor Abram Sualog.

The resolution will be submitted to the DENR.

The LGU also vowed to closely monitor the ongoing drainage project of the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority.

A crackdown on business establishments with illegal drainage connections will also be conducted.

The incomplete drainage system is seen as one of the factors of the flooding problem in the island.

The LGU will also address traffic and solid waste management in the island.

Members of business groups Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry-Boracay Chapter and Boracay Foundation, Inc. pledged their commitment to support the programs of the LGU to save Boracay. (With a report from the Philippine News Agency/PN)
