KALIBO, Aklan – The local government of Malay, Aklan still owes ECOS Sanitary Landfill and Waste Management Corp. P93 million for its garbage collection services in Boracay Island.
ECOS president Oliver Zamora said they tried to collect the payment, which has been piling up since January this year.
Zamora added despite the unpaid hauling services, they
managed to bring in the best practices of Republic Act 9003, or the Ecological
Solid Waste Management Act in the garbage collection and disposal.
The company has a 15-year
contract with the local government.
Every five years, the garbage hauling program is evaluated by the company and the local government.
“ECOS ay kaibigan, kaagabay ninyo sa Boracay. This is business but we take into consideration the welfare of the people. We stick to the guidelines of RA 9003,” said Zamora.
According to him, ECOS hauled about 60 to 70 tons of waste per day in Boracay Island.
From Barangay Manoc-Manoc staging area, twelve 10-wheeler and 6-wheeler trucks transports the collected garbage from Sambiray port in mainland Malay to a sanitary landfill in Barangay Kabulihan.
A monitoring team from the local government also monitors the hauling operations from 1 a.m. to 9 a.m.
“We did not cut any corners or shortcuts in the proper disposal of garbage. Our rates are quite low compared to other cities in the country,” Zamora said. (With a report from Akean Forum/PN)
