MANILA – President Rodrigo Duterte appointed Atty. Benedicto Malcontento as the new prosecutor general to head the National Prosecution Service (NPS) of the Department of Justice (DOJ).

Justice secretary Menardo Guevarra said Malcontento will begin reporting next week to the NPS, which served as the prosecution arm of the DOJ.

Malcontento replaced retired Prosecutor General Victor Sepulvida.

“The President appointed Atty. Benedicto Malcontento, a private practitioner, as the new prosecutor general,” Guevarra said. “Atty. Malcontento will take his oath before me on Tuesday, July 2.”

“Atty. Malcontento is a lawyer with exposure in criminal litigation. He will jive with the NPS in time,” he added.

Duterte’s selection of Malcontento did not come as a surprise as he was a graduate of the San Beda College of Law.

When Duterte has yet to choose a replacement for Sepulvida, Makati City prosecutor Jorge Catalan and Senior Deputy Prosecutor general Richard Anthony Fadullon acted as officers-in-charge./PN
