BACOLOD City – In Hacienda Cabyayan Ybiernas, Barangay Dos Hermanas, Talisay City, Negros Occidental at about 8:30 a.m. on Jan. 9, a 45-year-old man injured a barangay tanod with a scythe.
The tanod’s other companion came to his colleague’s rescue. The attacker, who also had a gun, died. His gun went off during a grappling with the tanod. He got hit on the head.
The man was Sunny Caballero. He was declared “dead on arrival” at the Talisay City Health Center.
The tanod that he attacked with a scythe was Eduardo Castro. He was taken to the Queen of Mercy Hospital in Bacolod City for treatment.
Earlier on Sunday, Caballero tried to set his house on fire. His live-in partner ran away and sought the help of tanods.
The tanods trooped to the couple’s place.
Instead of cooperating, Cabellero attacked Castro with a scythe.
Tanod Alan Dela Rosa came to Castro’s rescue, discovering in the process that Cabellero also had a gun – a .357. Grappling ensued.
The gun went off. It hit Caballero.
Tanod Dela Rosa surrendered to the Talisay City police station./PN
