ILOILO City â An unattended lighted candle led to a fire that struck eight houses in Zone 3, Barangay Hibao-an Sur, Mandurriao district.
Five houses were destroyed while three were damaged.
Fire Officer 2 John Mark Macoco estimated the cost of damage at P500,000.
The Bureau of Fire Protection received a fire call at around 4:45 p.m. on Aug. 26.
The blaze lasted about 45 minutes. The Fire bureau declared a âfire outâ at around 5:30 p.m.
Macoco said the fire started from the house owned by April Joy Baron, one of those destroyed. A lighted candle was left unattended on top of a plastic drawer, he said.
Police Officer 3 Romarico Baron, Rosano Baron, Romelia Oditor, and Rachel Imbultorio owned the other destroyed houses. Damaged houses were owned by Dolores Baron, Merlinda Aduana and Rosalinda Aduana.
Resident Rosario Baron sustained abrasions on the left upper back and right shoulder. She got first-aid treatment from the Iloilo City Emergency Response team. Hers was the only recorded injury.
The City Social Welfare and Development Office said they will provide assistance to a total of 34 affected individuals.
The city government, through the Office of the Mayor, will give the victims financial aid, too â P5,000 for those with destroyed houses and P3,000 for those with damaged houses â City Administrator Hernando Galvez said in a phone interview./PN
