ILOILO City – Mae Arne Meniel was urinating in their toilet in Barangay Calajunan, Mandurriao district at around 11:05 p.m. on Tuesday when she heard a series of gunshots.

Then the 30-year-old noticed something painful on her face – a bullet grazed her. Her house had been strafed.

Police from Mandurriao and Oton, Iloilo were looking into the incident that they said – based on what the investigators have so far gathered – was triggered by a dispute over a farming site.

Meniel was taken to the Western Visayas Medical Center in the district. While it was not severe, her wound required stitches.

Officers from the Mandurriao police station recovered one deformed slug from inside the victim’s house yesterday. The house, the officers said, was also riddled with several bullet holes.

Investigators were looking at Barangay Pakiad in Oton as the origin of the gunfire, based on the accounts of Meniel herself and several witnesses.

“Several witness naghambal nga ang lupok naghalin sa Pakiad, Oton, Iloilo, across sang creek,” said Chief Inspector Juvy Navales, Mandurriao police chief.

Asked about the motive, Navales gave a sketchy description of their lead.

Ang mga talamnan sang nagpatiro is nagkalapierdi kay ang dira nga area is alagyan na da, so basi natapakan kag nangakig ang suspect,” she said.

The Mandurriao police were looking into a “person of interest” but refused to disclose their identity so as not to compromise their probe./PN
