DID you know that out of the world’s more than 70 self-tolerant mangrove species, around 46 species exist in the Philippines?

According to the Department of Environment Natural Resources (DENR) Ecosystem Research and Development Bureau, one study showed that a kilometer-wide mangrove region might help lessen the strength of a tsunami by 70 percent. The coastal community benefits from mangrove trees because they give shelter and protection.

Mangroves, also known as halophytes, are salt-tolerant trees that thrive in even the harshest coastal environments. Its existence has a significant impact on the ecosystem. Seagrass and coral reefs are both parts of the coastal and marine ecology. Mangrove forests are essential to the health of coral reefs because they protect coasts, reduce carbon emissions, and are an important component of entire underwater ecosystems.

Mangroves thrive in various coastal areas throughout Western Visayas’ six provinces, including Aklan, Antique, Capiz, Guimaras, Iloilo, and Negros Occidental.

The rehabilitation of the Iloilo River had a significant impact on the city’s development. A diverse and robust ecosystem is shown by the vast amount of mangroves, a large number of migrating birds, and ample marine life in the river. Its magnificence may enthrall everyone. It is a haven for those seeking a break from the hustle and bustle of metropolitan life.

“Iloilo City is truly rich with mangrove forests and is a haven of our coastal and marine resources. We must be grateful and do our utmost to protect them,” according to DENR-6 regional director Livino Duran.

Although Iloilo City is a heavily urbanized city in Western Visayas, inhabitants can breathe fresh air from the plentiful mangroves at the Iloilo River Esplanade and other urban parks/plazas.
