MANILA – A court ordered the rearrest of Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) leaders Benito Tiamzon and wife Wilma after the breakdown of peace talks between the government and the left.
In a Jan. 11 decision, the Manila Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 32 granted the Department of Justice’s motion for the cancellation of the couple’s bail and issued a warrant of arrest against them.
The Tiamzons and another rebel, Adelberto Silva, were on trial for murder in connection with the discovery of a mass grave in Leyte, where 15 alleged victims of the communist rebel purge in the 1980s were buried.
They were released from detention upon government’s request in 2016 as they were tapped as consultants in peace negotiations between the government and the National Democratic Front of the Philippines.
Benito Tiamzon was identified as CPP-New People’s Army chairman and his wife as secretary-general.
On Dec. 13 last year the Tiamzons and Silva filed a joint comment before the Manila RTC Branch 32 urging the court to deny government’s plea to take them back into custody.
They said the Department of Justice failed to submit to court a formal notice of the termination of the peace talks. (ABS-CBN News)
