MANILA – The country’s capital will serve as host of the Final Phase of the FIBA (International Basketball Federation) Basketball World Cup 2023.
In an announcement posted in FIBA’s website last night, the showpiece tournament, which will be co-hosted by Indonesia, Japan and the Philippines, is scheduled to take place from August 25 to September 10, 2023.
The three countries will first host the Group Phase. It is the first time in the competition’s history that it is to be staged in more than one country.
“The approved dates of the competition have been decided by FIBA’s Central Board following consultation with the host nations and a recommendation by FIBA’s Competitions Commission,” FIBA said.
Just like the format used during the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 in China, FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 will feature 32 of the best national basketball teams around the world.
Spain was crowned as the world champion after defeating Argentina 95-75 in FIBA’s biggest event last year.
FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023’s qualification process will include six windows over a 15-month period across the four regions of Africa, Americas, Asia/Oceania and Europe.
The road to the 2023 World Cup started in February 2020 through the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 European Pre-Qualifiers, which will qualify eight teams for the European Qualifiers.
If plans won’t miscarry due to coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic worldwide, the FIBA Basketball World Cup Americas Pre-Qualifiers later this year will qualify four teams to the Americas Qualifiers.
FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023’s qualification will take place from November 2021 to February 2023
From November 2021 to February 2023, 80 national teams in the qualifiers will fight for a spot in the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023. The first window of qualification will be played from November 22-30, 2021./PN
