MANILA – University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons leaned on endgame baskets from Anton Manuel for its 75-71 win over University of the East Red Warriors in their UAAP 79 men’s seniors basketball match Wednesday.

With the score tied at 69, Manuel scored four straight points, a jumper and two free throws for a 73-69 lead at SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City. Two freebies by Jerson Prado later on sealed the win for Maroons.

Manuel finished with 17 points, including three three-point conversions, to lead the way for Fighting Maroons, which snapped its three-game losing skid and improved to a 1-3 win-loss record.

Andres Desiderio also finished with 17 markers, while returning Dave Moralde contributed 13 points for Maroons, which gave Ilonggo mentor Bong Perasol his first win as the team’s new mentor.

Red Warriors opened the match with a 19-8 lead on baskets by Negrense Nick Abanto and Edson Batiller, but Maroons answered with its own rally to snatch the lead at 21-19 on a triple by Manuel.

Fighting Maroons’ rally reached 21-0 as it built a 29-19 lead on a triple by Jarrell Lim and an inside hit by Desiderio. But its lead quickly dissipated on conversions by Mark Olayon and Batiller, moving up 37-34 at the half.

Both teams went on a tight exchange in the second half until Red Warriors held to a 67-65 on a Batiller jumper. UP then uncorked a 10-4 scoring run to take the victory.
Olayon top-scored with 15 points, while Batiller and Abanto chipped in with 14 and 11 points, respectively, for UE, which slid down to a 0-4 win-loss mark./PN
