BACOLOD City – Most graduates from higher education institutions in Western Visayas took business and tourism-related courses, according to the Commission on Higher Education (CHED).
CHED reported that those who took business, hospitality management and tourism management courses comprised 25 percent of the total number of graduates in the region in 2017.
The percentage is equivalent to 10,406 graduates, 7,032 were males and 3,374 were females, the report showed.
They were followed by information technology graduates at 15.1 percent, health graduates at 12.3 percent, teaching education graduates, 12.2 percent, and maritime graduates, 8.9 percent.
Graduates of law and criminology and industrial technology courses tied at 5.7 percent. Engineering graduates followed them at 5.6 percent, arts and sciences graduates at 4.2 percent, and agriculture and fisheries graduates at 2.8 percent.
CHED regional tourism and hospitality programs officer-in-charge Efren Sucaldito said business establishments have sprouted in the region.
These establishments will eventually need workers, Sucaldito said.
“[Business] graduates can obtain jobs whether in the public and private sector,” he added.
Sucaldito also stressed that the high workforce demand can be attributed to the high number of students taking business-related courses, like business administration, hospitality management, accountancy, accounting technology, real estate management, management accounting, information system, entrepreneurship, office administration, and customs administration, among others.
