Mapua cardinals fends off Arellano, clinches NCAA basketball No. 1 seed

MANILA – Mapua University Cardinals fended off a late rally from Arellano University Chiefs to secure a 75-69 win in the NCAA Season 100 men’s basketball tournament on Saturday at the Cuneta Astrodome in Pasay City.

Leading 68-60 with over two minutes remaining, the Cardinals saw the Chiefs go on a 7-1 run to trim the deficit to 69-67. However, Chris Hubilla’s timely basket gave Mapua breathing room at 71-67.

Clint Escamis then sank three of four free throws, followed by a split charity from JC Recto, sealing the victory for the NCAA Season 99 men’s basketball tournament second placers.

Hubilla and Escamis finished with 12 points apiece, while Marc Cuenco added 11 markers as the Cardinals sealed the top spot heading into the Final Four with their 15-3 record.

The Cardinals, which won all of its nine matches in the second round of eliminations, will have a twice-to-beat advantage against Lyceum of the Philippines Pirates in the semifinals round.

Ernest Geronimo finished with 15 points, Jaedan Ongotan added 13 markers, while John Capulong and John Hernal had 11 and 10, respectively, as the Chiefs dropped to 7-11.

Meanwhile, also-ran San Sebastian College Golden Stags capped off their season with a stunning 79-70 victory over reigning champions San Beda University Red Lions.

Reymart Escobido led the way with 19 points, including three triples, alongside three steals, two assists, and one rebound as the Golden Stags wrapped up their season with a 6-12 win-loss record.

Rafael Are added 13 markers, five assists, three rebounds, and three steals, while Reggz Gabat and Tristan Felebrico contributed 12 and 11 points, respectively, for the Golden Stags.

Ilonggo John Bryan Sajonia was the lone double-digit scorer for the Red Lions with 14 points. They will head to the Final Four round as the No. 3 seed with a 10-8 record and will have a twice-to-win disadvantage over No. 2 College of St. Benilde Blazers./PN
