BACOLOD City – Negros Occidental governor Alfredo Marañon Jr. stressed yesterday that there is “no need” for a dead-or-alive order against illegal drug suspects in the province.
Marañon said this in light of Silay City mayor Mark Golez’s statement ordering the local police to arrest suspected drug lord Michael Divinagracia “dead or alive.”
Marañon said it is not proper to give such order against drug suspects for they may be innocent.
He added that some drug suspects are just “small-time players” who can be rehabilitated or can change.
Police must only arrest suspects whom they have “enough” evidence against, Marañon stressed.
“There is a saying that it is better to let go one thousand guilty individuals than to jail one innocent person,” he added.
Moreover, Marañon appealed to the national government to deploy additional Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) personnel in the province.
The PDEA office in Negros Occidental lacks enough manpower, Marañon said.
Despite this, Marañon still lauded the agency for capturing big-time drug suspects./PN
