MANILA – Senators lambasted the sudden hero’s burial of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos at the Libingan ng mga Bayani.
Marcos, whose hero’s burial was previously contested by human rights victims during the Martial Law era, was reportedly buried on Friday noon.
Ilonggo Sen. Franklin Drilon said the “stealthy” and “hurried” burial of the former president “is reminiscent of the dark days of martial law.”
Even in death, Drilon said that Marcos is a thief.
“The atrocities perpetrated during Martial Law succeeded because the citizenry was kept in the dark. Marcos betrayed the country for decades; we should not allow him to continue to do so up to this day,” the Senate president pro tempore said. “Like what Marcos did for 21 years, he caught us off-guard like a thief in the night.”
By a 9-5 vote, the Supreme Court last Nov. 8 dismissed the petitions opposing the Marcos burial at the Heroes’ Cemetery in Taguig City.
“This is such a sinister move, to bury former President Marcos as secretly and quickly as possible. The manner by which he was buried speaks for itself,” said Sen. Paolo Benigno “Bam” Aquino IV.
Aquino said the Marcoses have remained “deaf” and “numb” to the human rights abuses and violations committed during the martial law years.
Sen. Francis Pangilinan assured that the Libingan ng mga Bayani will not be the permanent burial site for Marcos’ remains.
“Habang may mga taong naninindigan laban sa naging pag-aabuso ng diktadura, itutulak natin na ang mga labi niya ay dapat ilipat,” Pangilinan said.
The senator said the move will just worsen divisions between Filipinos.
“They may have won this battle but the war is far from over. Hindi closure ang magiging resulta ng paglibing na ito dahil mula lamang binuksan ng administrasyon at pamilyang Marcos ang mga sugat na dulot ng pang-aabuso, pag-torture, at pagpatay at pandarambong na isinagawa ng diktadura,” he added.
Sen. Risa Hontiveros, for her part, maintained that Marcos is not a hero.
“Hanggang sa dulo, pumupuslit ang yumaong diktador. Nagpuslit ng kaban ng bayan. Pumuslit sa pananagutan at katarungan. At ngayon, pinuslit ang kanyang bangkay para mabigyan ng isang pekeng parangal. Hanggang sa dulo, nagnanakaw si Marcos,” Hontiveros said.
Party-list group Bayan Muna described Friday’s burial of Marcos as a “dastardly act” and a “slap on the face of the victims of the human rights violations during Martial law.”
It also insulted the Supreme Court since the high court has yet to decide with finality, said Rep. Caros Isagani Zarate.
“We will not take this sitting down and more protests would be launched against the Marcoses,” Zarate ended./PN
