MANILA – President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has moved the non-working holiday in observance of Ninoy Aquino Day from Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2024, to Friday, Aug. 23, 2024.
In the Proclamation No. 665 released on Thursday night, the Chief Executive said the move was to give Filipinos a longer weekend that would promote domestic tourism.
The proclamation added the change will give the Filipino a four-day holiday from August 23 to August 26, the last Monday of August, where the National Heroes’ Day is being commemorated.
“In order to provide for a longer weekend thereby promoting domestic tourism, the celebration of Ninoy Aquino Day may be moved from 21 August 2024 (Wednesday) to 23 August 2024 (Friday),” Marcos said.
The President, however, said that the historical significance of the Ninoy Aquino Day must be maintained despite the moving of the holiday.
August 21 was declared a non-working holiday in commemoration of the martyrdom of former Senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr.
President Marcos has also instructed the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) to issue the appropriate circular to implement the proclamation for the private sector./PN
