PAVIA, Iloilo – Cesar Mariano and Chester Acuyong emerged as category champions in the NM John Michael B. Silvederio Birthday Chess Tournament held recently at Robinsons Place Pavia here.
Mariano, one of the mainstays of Iloilo Kisela Knights in the Professional Chess Association of the Philippines, leaned on his wide experience to rule the Open Category.
Lloyd Lanciola, meanwhile, finished at runner up behind Mariano followed by Fritz Bryan Porras, Gil Somosa, Fiona Geeweneth Guirhem and Dennis Bernas.
As the Open category champion, Mariano received the top prize of P5,000, while the second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth runner up ended up with P4,000, P3,000, P2,000, P1,000 and P750, respectively.
Karlo Britanico received a special award as Top Oton player, while Arsenio Armada was hailed as Top Lapaz player. Teddy Berondo was Top Senior and Jovelyn Sepanton as Top Female. They all received P500 each.
Acuyong, on the other hand, stunned his opponents to be declared as the champion on the 14-and-under category. He received a cash prize of P2,500 plus a trophy.
Mark Alfonso Azaola ended up as the runner up player, followed by Rico John Aclaracion and Vaughn Robert Oberio. They received cash prizes of P1,500, P1,000 and P750, respectively.
Pavianon standout Shan Lester Lañada Jamerlan, meanwhile, was hailed as the Top 8 and under chess player and received P500 cash prize and a medal.
Faith Argenal and Iana Angela Sotaridona, on the other hand, were the Top 10 and under and Top 12 and under, respectively. The two also took home P500 plus medal.
The one day chess tournament organized by Kisela Knights veteran Silvederio drew 51 chess players in the Open Category and 47 woodpushers in the 14-and-under./PN
