Market vendors tapped to promote consumer welfare

SAN JOSE, Antique – The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) engaged with Patnongon Market Vendors Association (PMVA) in consumer welfare advocacy activities.

Trade and Industry Development Specialist Glen Fernando said a briefing on Fair Trade Laws was recently conducted with the officers of the PMVA, noting that the association is an active partner of DTI Antique in the implementation of the consumer welfare advocacy programs of the department.

Early on, a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) was executed between DTI Antique and PMVA to forge a partnership of both parties in protecting consumers’ interests and promoting ethical business practices in the municipality.

During the orientation, DTI tackled the updates in the implementation of the Fair Trade Laws such as Business Name Registration, Standards Law, Labeling, and Price Tag law., including a discussion on the Safety Seal Certification (SSC) program for COVID 19 prevention, the No Shortchanging Act, and the DTI Bagwis Program.

Gabriel Ebanen of the Small Business Corporation also discussed the financing program for micro, small and medium enterprises.

Also, the Municipal Treasurer’s Office (MTO), Economic and Enterprise Development Office (MEEDO), PMVA, Negosyo Center, and DTI, conducted an Operation Timbangan in the public market of Patnongon to ensure the promotion of ethical business practices in the marketplace.

Operation Timbangan was able to check 138 weighing scales (clock type and digital) at the wet section (fish and meat), vegetable section, dried fish section, rice and feeds section, and grocery section, of which 122 were found accurate and 16 were defective.

The inaccurate / defective weighing scales were pulled out / confiscated by the MEEDO/MTO staff for calibration. (PIA-Antique/PN)
