Maroons, Tamaraws stay perfect in Passi basketball

MANILA – University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons and Far Eastern University Tamaraws have kept their unbeaten records in the Passi Invitational Inter Collegiate Basketball Tournament at the City of Passi Arena in Passi City, Iloilo.

Led by Bright Akhuetie, Jun Manzo and Andres Desiderio, the Fighting Maroons cruised to its second straight win in the tournament with a 72-66 win over National University Bulldogs on Thursday.

The game was tight for both teams from the start. But the Fighting Maroons, which played without Ricci Rivero, got timely baskets from Akhuetie and Desiderio to stave off the Bulldogs.

Akhuetie finished with 17 points while Manzo and Desiderio added 12 and 11 points, respectively, for the Fighting Maroons.

Sean Ildefonso top-scored with 22 points for the Bulldogs.

In the second game, the Tamaraws was able to use its reserve players after cruising to an easy 67-56 victory over the University of San Jose Recoletos Jaguars.

Alejandrino Inigo top-scored with 16 points, while Arvin Tolentino and Joseph Nunag had eight and seven points, respectively, for the Tamaraws.

Fletcher Galvez finished with 10 points for the Jaguars.

The four-day tournament will end today with the Bulldogs and Jaguars clashing at 4:30 p.m. for the third place trophy, and Tamaraws and Fighting Maroons contesting the championship at 6 p.m./PN
