ROXAS City – The Provincial Board of Capiz session on May 31 was filled with emotions when Board member Eleuper Martinez delivered an apologetic speech addressing colleague Jonathan “Sonny” Besa.
“Nagapangayo ako pasensya kay BM Besa kag sa iya pamilya kag asawa kung nakabuhi ako sang mga tinaga nga nakasakit sang ila balatyagon kag nakaapekto sang ila relasyon nga mag-asawa,” Martinez said.
Days after Besa filed an ethics complaint against him for flashing a “dirty finger” during a previous session, Martinez insinuated that the former was having extramarital affairs, something that Besa has denied.
“Kung may insinuation man nga ‘extramarital affairs’ kay Besa, ina wala sang kamatuoran kay sa akon pagkabalo wala man sang extramarital affairs si BM Besa,” Martinez said during their May 31 session.
“I should have been more circumspect and tactful. BM Sonny, from my family to your family, thank you very much,” he said before colleagues, legislative staffers and the press. “From the bottom of my heart, my sincere apologies. I will do everything in my power to ensure this never happens again.”
Martinez and Besa shook hands as their colleagues commend them.
“I think BM Martinez has met all the requirements I have expected of him,” Besa told this reporter. “And because he made a public apology and as a true gentleman, I will no longer pursue the filing of a libel case against him.”
Taking the floor to speak, Besa said: “The measure you use [on] your fellowmen will be the same measure the Lord will use [on you]. I just like to inform everybody that my relationship with my wife is strong as it [stands] on solid foundation.”
Besa gave Martinez until May 31 to issue a public apology for “besmirching my name and that of my family in public” or he will file a libel charge against the latter.
Earlier Martinez left an apologetic letter perceived to be about his conflict with Besa, but the letter did not mention Besa’s name. Besa said Martinez’s apology in the letter lacked sincerity./PN
