Mary Jane Veloso not yet executed, says Indonesian exec

Mary Jane Veloso

MANILA – The Attorney General’s Office (AGO) of the Indonesian government belied reports that Filipina deathrow convict Mary Jane Veloso had been executed in Indonesia.

In a statement to the The Jakarta Post, AGO spokesperson Mukri said Veloso is still very much alive as there were no scheduled execution among convicted detainees in Indonesia.

“No, no it’s not true,” Mukri said. “There have been no [executions]. Just wait for information about the next round.”

Agus Salim, who served as Veloso’s lawyer in Indonesia, has also confirmed that the Filipina overseas worker was still being held at the Wirogunan women’s prison in Yogyakarta.

“The information about the execution is not true. Mary Jane is still in prison, awaiting a ruling from the Philippine court,” Salim said.

Veloso was supposed to have been executed on April 29, 2015, but it was postponed to allow her to testify against her alleged illegal recruiters in the Philippines. The Department of Justice has already filed cases against her alleged recruiters.

Veloso was again spared late 2015 as the AGO decided to forego a third round of executions for 2015 due to its economic slowdown.

Veloso was held Yogyakaarta airport after being asked to bring with her a travelling bag which later turned out to have 2.6 kilos of heroin. Veloso was then convicted of drug trafficking./PN
