CAPIZ – Massive reforestation program 1M Kahoy Project of the Capiz Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (CaPENRO) officially kicked off on June 25 in towns of Dao and Panay.

The simultaneous kick-off were joined by more than 500 Capiznons from the academe, non-government organizations, government agencies, and local government units among others

The 1M Kahoy Project efforts aims to increase Capiz’s forest cover and address water supply issues, fight the loss of biodiversity, increase food sustainability, and combat climate change.

The kickoff in Camp Escutin, Barangay Matagnop, Dao was led by Gov. Esteban Evan Contreras and members of the Environmental Management Committee composed of different national government agencies, local government units, non-governmental organizations, civic and people’s organization, and academes.

The Barangay Agojo, Panay kickoff event, meanwhile, was led by the Bangon Agojo Fisherfolk Association together with volunteers and participants from people’s organization, national government agencies, youth organization, academes, non-governmental organizations, and local government units.

According to CaPENRO chief Atty. Emilyn Arboleda-Depon, the kick off was very meaningful as it pursues the ridge to reef approach, a holistic approach of protecting and rehabilitating both the upland and the lowland, acknowledging the relationship and the connection of both ecosystems.

Around 1,750 native and fruit bearing trees were planted in the Dao while 1,200 seedlings of beach forest trees and mangroves were planted in Panay.

The 1M Kahoy Project will continue until November of this year in celebration of the Provincial Environment Consciousness Month. (With a report from CaPENRO/PN)
