MANILA – Maynilad Water Services (MWSS) opened on Friday the first of five surplus valves meant to supply water to Manila Water in a bid to mitigate the water crisis now besetting the latter’s concession area.
Maynilad earlier agreed to share 50 million liters of water per day with Manila Water, which supplies the eastern part of Metro Manila.
“Nagkataon lang po na may kaunting surplus sa Maynilad, ito itutulong namin sa Manila Water isa lang ito sa initially five na location na na-identify namin. Nagkataon po na ito ‘yung pinakamabilis na mabubuksan,” Maynilad Water Supply Operations Head Ronaldo Padua said.
MWSS administrator for engineering Leonor Cleofas also revealed plans for cloud seeding to generate rain over Angat Dam if it reaches critical levels.
“Cloud seeding gagawin natin ‘yan sa Angat kung magiging critical ang level ng Angat,” she said.
The Angat Dam, which supplies around 97 percent of water in Metro Manila, is shared 60-40 by the two concessionaires, in favor of Maynilad.
Maynilad was joined by an official of Manila Water, the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System, House Speaker Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, and other lawmakers during the opening of the valve.
The House Oversight Committee on Metro Manila Development will conduct a hearing on Monday to look into the water problem in eastern Metro Manila and present solutions to ease the burden of the estimated 1.2 million households in the area. (With ABS-CBN News/PN)
