Mayors of Santa Barbara, Batad drop Ferj for Toto

ILOILO – There is no use sticking it out with the Nacionalista Party (NP), said three-term mayor Dennis Superficial of Santa Barbara town.

He issued the statement at the swearing in of his brother Engineer Niel Superficial as new member of the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino – Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) before Cong. Arthur “Toto” Defensor Jr. on Friday night last week.

Niel is running for Santa Barbara mayor under the camp of Defensor, the PDP-Laban candidate for governor.

Mayor Superficial did not take oath as new PDP-Laban member on Friday but he did not discount the possibility of joining the ruling party.

Early this year he took his oath as member of the NP whose candidate for governor is Cong. Ferjenel Biron.

“This is a result of miscalculation, misklada sang NP sa amon nga distrito,” said Mayor Superficial about this new political development in Santa Barbara.

Though technically he is still an NP member – for not having formally resigned from the party yet – Mayor Superficial said “because of this development there is no use naman nga magtinir ako sa NP.”

He may be transferring to another political party but “I will not just say it at the moment. Depende ina sa development,” he said vaguely.

Barred by law from seeking a fourth consecutive term, Mayor Superficial was mum on his future political plans.

“Whatever it is there for me I just have to be ready,” he said, although resting from politics may also be an option.

With his brother Niel taking oath as new PDP-Laban members were two incumbent Sangguniang Bayan members of Santa Barbara Rodrigo Sorongon (who will run for vice mayor) and Dennis Octaviano (reelectionist), and candidates for municipal councilors Alan Sontillanosa, Elberto Pudadera, Myrna Sontillano, Reginald Suplido, Melchor Teves, Ramon Julius Sodusta, and Remegio Gumban.

Meanwhile, Batad, Iloilo’s Mayor Pedro Alarcon also took his oath as new PDP-Laban yesterday. He left the NP of Biron.

Alarcon’s wife, former mayor Elvira “Inday Little” Alarcon, is running for mayor of Batad under PDP-Laban of Defensor.

With them who took oath as new PDP-Laban members were Sangguniang Bayan (SB) member Ricardo P. Ayupan who is running for vice mayor; some incumbent SB members and new personalities, namely Jonathan Abeja, Romie Sandoy, Jobelle Barreto, Johnny Mendoza, and Abner Rubrico./PN
