ILOILO City – “For me, the most unforgettable accomplishment was when I was able to see President Rodrigo Roa Duterte,” said Mayor Jose Espinosa III.
He recently highlighted Iloilo City’s “best accomplishments” in 2017, particularly recalling his first three months as local chief executive after his predecessor, Jed Patrick Mabilog, was dismissed from the service by the Office of the Ombudsman for unexplained wealth.
Last Nov. 23, 2017 Espinosa had an audience with Duterte in Malacañang. It lasted for 45 minutes.
“We are doing something to serve the public better,” said Espinosa, adding that establishing the Iloilo City Barangay Drug-Clearing Program Assistance (ICBDCPA) Team through Executive Order No. 124 in Nov. 16, 2017 was a huge help in the antidrug war of the government.
Duterte had branded Iloilo as “most shabulized” and “bedrock of illegal drugs” and accused Mabilog as a protector of illegal drugs.
According to Espinosa, as a result of the ICBDCPA, barangays Luna and Libertad-Santa Isabel in Jaro and Sampaguita in City Proper became the first three villages of the city to be “drug-cleared” by the Regional Oversight Committee on Barangay Drug-Clearing Operation on Dec. 14, 2017.
The team was assigned to closely coordinate with all barangays, assess drug-clearing program’s present status, and to coordinate with concerned agencies such as the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency, Philippine National Police, and Department of the Interior and Local Government, and other government agencies.
Espinosa was also cited as Clean Air Champion by Clean Air Philippines Movement, Inc. during the National Clean Air Month Culminating Activity at the Iloilo Convention Center in Mandurriao district Nov. 29, 2017.
The Clean Air City Award 2017 was given to Iloilo City Government for being consistent in instituting, implementing, and sustaining policies and programs to eliminate air pollution.
Jaro Archbishop Angel N. Lagdameo commended Espinosa on Dec. 13, 2017 for his initiatives in clearing of kiosks, installation of LED flood lights at Jaro, Libertad, and La Paz plazas to improve public safety.
Iloilo City was hailed best performing city in Western Visayas in the 2017 Excellence in Local Governance Awards of the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) in a ceremony held at the Iloilo Convention Center on Dec. 19.
The plaque was given by DILG undersecretary Austere Panadero, DILG regional director Anthony Nuyda and DILG assistant director Maria Calpiza Sardua.
Espinosa assured the public that he will continue to promote good governance for the city to achieve more improvements and innovations in 2018. (Thessalonia Ordales, Iloilo City PIO/PN)
