MANILA – Meralco Sparks kept its unbeaten record in the 2017 Philippine Football League after dominating over Davao Aguilas, 2-0, at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.

Curt Dizon and James Younghusband scored a goal each to lead the way for Meralco Sparks, which maintained its hold of the top spot in the standings (4-0-0, 12 points).

“We knew that this will be a tough match,” said Meralco Sparks head coach Aris Caslib. “That was why, heading into this game, we worked on our organization in attack.”

Meralco Sparks quickly got into the scoring column on Saturday night as Dizon fired one on close range from a pass by Joaquin Canas in the sixth minute. They failed to score a follow-up as Davao Aguilas tightened its defense.

At the second half, Meralco Sparks managed to double the advantage with James Younghusband tapping back a blocked shot of brother Phil. Davao Aguilas had chances to score, but Meralco Sparks easily foiled their attempts.

In the other match, Kaya relied on the stellar performance of Jordan Mintah to score a 4-2 victory over Ilocos United at the Quirino Stadium in Vigan.

The Ghanaian striker had been active on the offensive end as he involved in the four goals that Kaya scored to tally its second consecutive victory for seven points in the standings.

Mintah forced a penalty that was easily converted by Adam Reed to open the scoring for the Makati City-based team in the 23rd minute. He later set up Robert Lopez Mendy to stretch the lead to 2-0.

Ilocos United managed to trim the deficit to 2-1 on a conversion by Fil-Nigerian Chima Uzoka, but Mintah made his presence felt anew when he assisted Ilonggo Jovin Bedic for a 3-1 Kaya advantage.

Mintah capped off his game with his own conversion from the penalty area for a 4-1 advantage before Uzoka notched his second goal of the game with a hit in the stoppage time./PN
