MANILA – Meralco Bolts moved a step closer to the PBA Governors’ Cup finals after clobbering Star Hotshots 98-74 in Game 2 of their best-of-five semifinals last night at the Santa Rosa Multipurpose Complex in Laguna.

Import Allen Durham, Jared Dillinger and Ranidel de Ocampo led with 18 points apiece while Baser Amer and Chris Newsome contributed 16 and 10, respectively, for Bolts.

Another win in Game 3 on Thursday night at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum will send Meralco to its second consecutive Governors’ Cup finals appearance.

After trailing 4-5 early in the game, Bolts unloaded a 21-4 run behind outside shots by Amer, Mike Tolomia and Jared Dillinger to build a 30-11 edge.

Hotshots got consecutive points early in the second quarter but 3-pointers from Amer and Dillinger and inside hits from de Ocampo and Durham allowed Bolts to surge 53-32 at the half.

Bolts continued to pull away in the third with conversions from Amer, Newsome and de Ocampo and built its largest lead 81-51 on back-to-back triples by de Ocampo.

Hotshots had a late run in the fourth to come to within 62-81 but Bolts was quick to douse cold water on Star’s scoring with points from Clifford Hodge, de Ocampo and Dillinger that eventually sealed its win.

Mark Barroca led with 16 points while rookie Mon Abundo added 14 for Hotshots. Paul Lee, who sustained a knee injury, was held scoreless in just three minutes of play in the opening quarter./PN
