MERLITO Sabillo retained his ASEAN Boxing Federation (ABF) light flyweight belt after a unanimous decision victory over Crison Omayao at the SM City Bacolod Parking Area in Bacolod City.
The successful title defense on Friday was a first for the native of Toboso, Negros Occidental who won the belt after beating Indonesian Jack Amisa last June in Bacolod City.
Moreover, the 33-year-old will now be allowed to fight overseas as he managed two wins in his last three matches, in compliance with the new ruling of the Games and Amusements Board.
Dubbed âFist of Glory: Double Championship â Road to Glory,â the boxing card was presented by the Maris-Monju-Mayor Bing Leonardia Boxing Development Program as part of the MassKara Festival.
Sabillo had a blazing start when he pummeled Omayao with multiple hits, including a huge left straight that rocked the solid defense of his veteran opponent.
Omayao responded with his own shots midway in the match but Sabillo regained his dominance with counter punches, enough to secure the unanimous verdict of the three judges.
With the win, Sabillo improved his slate to 27-4-1 (win-loss-draw), with 13 knockout victories, while the 24-year-old Omayao went down to a 22-15-4 record, including seven stoppage wins.
Meanwhile, Jayr Raquinel of Bacolod City captured the Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation interim flyweight belt with a majority decision win over Richard Rosales.
The victory enabled the 20-year-old to keep his record clean â eight wins (five knockouts), no loss and one draw./PN
