BACOLOD City – A meteorite measuring three inches in diameter was found on the ground of Negros Occidental High School (NOHS) here.

Mario Amaca, school principal, said the space rock was found on Friday afternoon (June 4) by the wife of one of their security guards at the school guards’ barracks.

According to Amaca, the security guard and his wife were having a conversation when they heard an explosion.

At first the security guard thought that a nearby power transformer exploded. However, they soon noticed that a Styrofoam box nearby was on fire. When they doused it with water, they discovered the meteorite.

The rock is described to be greenish black in color. Amaca said they are presently seeking help from local geologists and officials from the Department of Science and Technology to have the space rock examined.

Amaca said he plans on using the meteorite for the school’s science classes, although he does not discount the possibility that the national government could take the space rock and display it in the National Museum of the Philippines in Metro Manila.

He was also thankful that no one was hurt in the incident, as such impact could have seriously injured or even killed someone./PN
