BORACAY – A new police force tasked to combat terrorism, insurgency and other crimes in this world-famous island and other areas in Aklan will be activated today.

The Metro Boracay Task Force – which covers Malay, Ibajay, Nabas and Buruanga towns – is under the command of Superintendent Ryan Manongdo, former deputy director of the Cebu Police Provincial Office.

According to Manongdo, the task force is only “temporary in nature.” It will be upgraded into a police district in the next six months, he added.

The police district will be composed of about 161 personnel, as Police Regional Office 6 director Chief Superintendent Cesar Hawthorne Binag envisions.

The police district will watch over crimes in the northwest Panay Peninsula.

According to Binag, the task force was created due to the growing investments and tourism activities in Boracay and the nearby areas.

Manongdo urged the Sangguniang Bayan of Malay to support the creation of the police district.

“We have to wait for the approval of Camp Crame for funding, and administrative and personnel requirements for the activation of new Boracay police district,” Manongdo said.

Once the police district is institutionalized, it will have a coordinative relationship with police forces from Romblon and Antique. (Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
