Pursuing its vision environmental protection and giving back to its communities, the Metro Iloilo Bulk Water Supply Corporation (MIB) on July 16 turned over its sustainable “Rainwater Harvester” project to the Sta. Rita Elementary School in Oton, Iloilo.

Metro Iloilo Bulk Water Supply Corporation (MIB) is a joint venture corporation of Metro Pacific Water (MPW) and the Metro Iloilo Water District (MIWD). MIB is the bulk water supplier of the MIWD, the water utility that provides this basic human need to the Ilonggos – a contributor to the economic growth of this local and committed to working hand in hand with Iloilo local government units to better deliver its services.

The “Rainwater Harvester” is a corporate social responsibility project of MIB, in partnership with MIWD. The initiative is led by MIB Human Resources Manager Sheena Marie Relano-Antonio and Engr. Ariel Jampayas Huyong, Facilities and Plant Maintenance Manager of MIB.

The project aims to provide a sustainable rainwater collection facility to public elementary schools, within MIWD’s franchise area, who are lacking adequate water resources. MIB sees the initiative as having a great impact on the environment, for its beneficiary communities, institutions, businesses, and local government units.

The Metro Iloilo Bulk Water Supply Corporation is shouldering the entire cost of these facilities, as well as its installation, repair, and regular maintenance. MIB has also vowed monthly scheduled preventive maintenance for donated “rainwater harvesters.”

On July 16, 2019, Sta. Rita Elementary School received the “Rainwater Harvester” which consisted of three drums equivalent to 600 liters of water. The facility is seen serving the elementary school’s some 410 pupils and 17 teachers, with the project officially inaugurated with a handwashing ceremony.

The turn-over rite and handwashing activity was graced by Oton Vice Mayor Vicente Flores Jr., Barangay Captain Danilo Villacastin, Public School District Supervisor Noel Salvadico, PTA President Ellen Cabalunos, Former PTA Federation President Engr. Wilson Otero, Former SB Member Japhet Salinas, Prinicpal Aylen S. Artuz of the Sta. Rita Elementary School, MIB Chief Operating Officer Engr. Rolixto V. Jodieres Jr. and MIWD Information Officer II Rizandro Napone.

“This project of the MIB will bring a great impact towards the environment, education and health of all the beneficiaries of this Rainwater Harvester,” Vice Mayor Flores lauded the Metro Iloilo Bulk Water Supply Corporation for its initiative.

This project of the Metro Iloilo Bulk Water Supply Corporation is a direct response to Department Education 10 s. 2016, or Policy and Guidelines for the Comprehensive Water, Sanitation and Hygiene in Schools (Wins) Program.

These “rainwater harvesters” will also serve as additional water storage tanks for spells of water scarcity brought about by climate change. The facility is also seen contributing to the reduction of floods as communities adapt the practice of water harvesting by their own means.

Metro Iloilo Bulk Water Supply Corporation fully supports the implementation of DepEd’s Wins program, seeking to champion sustainability and educate children about the importance of water by properly conserving and collecting the vital resource through a rainwater harvester. With the initiative, MIB hopes to develop a good partnership with local institutions and build a good relationship with the public sector.

Metro Iloilo Bulk Water Supply Corporation believes that the real future lies in the hands of our children and thus they say that “CHILDREN ARE OUR FUTURE,” therefore, cleaning our surroundings and encouraging proper handwashing among children can also prevent common sicknesses. MIB believes: “Clean hands save lives!”/PN
