VOTING 10-5 in an en banc session on Feb. 6, 2018 the Supreme Court once again submitted itself to the whims of fascist dictator Rodrigo Duterte by upholding the constitutionality of the martial law declaration in Mindanao. The decision effectively affirmed the legality of the government’s campaign of killings, harassment, bombings and militarization of communities in Mindanao.
Anakbayan fervently condemns the Supreme Court decision. With this, human rights violations in the region will only worsen as military and paramilitary forces are emboldened to commit atrocities against the people. At least 66 extrajudicial killings were recorded in Mindanao during the first seven months of martial rule in the region, while civilian communities in the hinterlands were subjected to intensified militarization, forced evacuation and food blockades by the military.
The high court’s ruling conveniently backs the fascist Duterte regime’s policy of stifling dissent. As the government upscales its operations to pursue communist rebels and the revolutionary movement, the indigenous peoples and peasant sectors, which have continuously defended their right to land and self-determination, are now again convenient targets of the military’s counterinsurgency operations.
Again, the Duterte administration has betrayed the people of Mindanao and turned a deaf ear to their loud cries for peace and justice in the region. We call on every Filipino youth to stand with the people of Mindanao and call for the ending of martial law in the region.
Martial law in Mindanao is the concrete manifestation of the fascist ways Duterte wants to expand in the entire country, and as such, the Filipino people must strongly unite against Duterte’s tyrannical rule. – EINSTEIN RECEDES, Anakbayan secretary general, <website: anakbayan.org> <Facebook.com/anakbayan> <Twitter: @anakbayan_ph>
