BACOLOD City – Negros Occidental governor Alfredo Marañon Jr. and Mayor Evelio Leonardia expressed grief over Miriam Defensor-Santiago’s death.
The demise of the former senator and presidential candidate “came as a surprise … especially among Ilonggos,” Marañon said.
According to the governor, the Philippines lost “one of the brightest gems of politics.”
“She will be remembered for her fighting stance and firebrand rhetoric. She will certainly be missed,” Marañon said. “To her family and friends, our condolences and prayers.”
Leonardia said the country “lost not only a voice in the Senate but also a commanding presence in the political landscape.”
He described Santiago’s “life work” as “an inspiration on how it is to love the country.”
“For us Ilonggos, the death of Santiago is mourned twice over,” said the mayor. “She was an example of how we who were born outside Manila can rise and become an important voice in nation-building.”/PN
