KALIBO, Aklan — A modern “AA”-rated slaughterhouse that would serve the domestic market will be built in this capital town.

The Department of Agriculture, through the National Meat Inspection Service (NMIS), had allotted P10 million for the construction of the abattoir in Brgy. Tinigaw, said Engr. Marlo Villanueva, municipal planning and development coordinator.

The municipal government, for its part, will provide a lot for the proposed abattoir; the negotiation for the lot purchase is on final stage, he said.

To make the slaughterhouse profitable, its facilities must be upgraded to conform to good manufacturing practice based on NMIS standards.

Villanueva said the new abattoir will enhance the town’s capability to supply high-quality and safe meat and meat products.

It will be operated and managed by the Municipal Economic Enterprise and Development Office, and will be equipped with modern mechanized slaughtering and holding pen facilities, among others.

Slaughterhouses rated “AA” have facilities and operational procedures that could process meat suitable for sale in any local or national market.

The current municipal slaughterhouse is also undergoing rehabilitation.

The municipal government plans to tap the services of the Metro Kalibo Water District to provide abundant water to ensure hygienic disposal at the abattoir./PN
