ILOILO City – Monorail would further improve the traffic situation in this city, according to Mayor Jose Espinosa III.
BYD Auto Industry Company Ltd. of China proposed the monorail – a single rail serving as a track for passenger or freight vehicles. In most cases the rail is elevated. Vehicles are either suspended from or straddle a narrow guide way.
“BYD’s monorail in our lovely city will not only enhance the city’s traffic management. It will also promote green technology,” said during BYD’s recent Multi-Layered Electrified Transportation Solution event in Pasay City, Metro Manila.
Aside from addressing the traffic congestion, Benjamin Zhao, senior regional manager of BYD’s Asia-Pacific Auto Sales Division, said it will also lessen carbon emission in a city.
This June, BYD would bare the result of its feasibility study on the proposed Iloilo City monorail.
“We have the best road network. But this is not enough,” said Espinosa.
The head of the Iloilo City Local Economic Investment and Promotions Office was hopeful of a favorable feasibility study result.
According to Ritchel Gavan, “basing sa pre-feasibility study, a monorail in this city is highly feasible… they are just telling us nga positive, very positive.”
“No one in the transport sector will be displaced,” she added. “There will be three lines within the city which are very strategic.”
The entrance and exits to and outside the city have been identified – terminals in Barangay Mohon, Arevalo district; and Barangay Ungka and Barangay Tagbak transport terminals in Jaro district./PN
