Moonlighting and misconduct

THE RECENT misconduct involving two members of the Philippine National Police (PNP) has spotlighted the need for stricter discipline and prohibition against moonlighting within the force.

This necessity for enhanced accountability was underlined by Brigadier General Jack Wanky, director of the Police Regional Office 6 (PRO-6) in Western Visayas. He has ordered stringent daily attendance checks as a preventive measure against the risks of neglect and misconduct stemming from unauthorized secondary employment. These checks ensure that officers are precisely where they should be, actively contributing to the safety and security of the community.

The importance of such measures became particularly evident following an incident with two Zamboanga-based Special Action Force commandos in Ayala-Alabang Village, Muntinlupa City. Not only were these officers involved in a public disturbance, but they were also discovered to be working as unauthorized security escorts for a Chinese national involved in offshore gaming operations— a clear violation of their professional obligations and a breach of trust.

In response to this, the PNP has implemented rigorous measures to monitor and ensure officer attendance and compliance with regulations. The aim is to foster a culture of professionalism within the force, for policemen to focus on their job.

The implicated officers in the recent incident have been relieved of their duties, and their supervisors are currently under scrutiny, signaling a no-tolerance policy towards such breaches of duty. This decisive PNP action is crucial for maintaining the operational integrity of the police, ensuring each member’s full presence and dedication to their roles, which is vital for sustaining community safety and trust.

It is important to recognize the broader implications of these measures. They are not just about punishing wrongdoing but are part of a comprehensive strategy to enhance the professionalism of our police force.

Through strict adherence to duty and the prohibition of moonlighting, we aim to foster a disciplined, reliable, and honorable police force, dedicated solely to serving and protecting the community with integrity and commitment.
