KALIBO, Aklan – Gov. Florencio Miraflores allayed worries expressed by Kalibonhons over ongoing developments at the airport in Barangay Caticlan, Malay.

The Kalibo International Airport will be upgraded and expanded as well.

In fact, the government has a three-year feasibility study on the project, Miraflores revealed, during the “Anyag” fashion show, one of the activities leading to the 61st Aklan Day, on Monday, April 24.

A planned 120-hectare reclamation project in Barangay Pook also aims to boost tourism.

“Don’t be afraid of Caticlan’s developments,” said the governor. “Future Kalibo investments and plans will create more and better jobs and opportunities for Aklanons.”

Airlines started launching domestic flights for Boracay travelers from Manila, Cebu, Coron Island (Palawan), and Davao to the Caticlan airport — officially the Godofredo P. Ramos Airport — using A320s jets in November 2016.

“Kalibo has its own place in the tourism industry despite the massive growth and development and the opening of the Caticlan airport to more commercial flights,” Miraflores said.

He also proudly declared that Aklan has “surpassed her mother province Capiz” in terms of local revenue generation and tourism receipts.

Aklan has higher locally sourced income than Iloilo, Cebu and Pampanga. It is not dependent on its internal revenue allocation share, he stressed.

Boracay Island in particular directly contributed billions to the local economy, travel and tourism, said Miraflores.

“Aklan has grown rapidly for the past years,” he said. “We will continue working together to realize the dreams of [the late] congressman Godofredo Ramos.”

Ramos filed on Jan. 29, 1954 House Bill No. 334, which seeks to make Aklan independent province. On April 25, 1956, then President Ramon Magsaysay signed the measure into law as Republic Act 1414. (With Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
