ILOILO City – Expect more encounters between the military and remnants of the New People’s Army (NPA) should they continue to refuse to return to the fold of law, according to the Philippine Army’s 3rd Infantry Division (3ID).
Major General Michael Samson, commander of the 3ID, said they would not stop running after the remaining rebels who refuse to surrender.
On the other hand, the Army’s 12th Infantry Battalion (12IB) unearthed the remains of a rebel in Sitio Bidang, Barangay Siya, Tapaz, Capiz on Monday, April 21.
The rebel was identified as Gino “Luyong” Giganto, a resident of Barangay Lahug, Tapaz and a member of Squad 2 of the dismantled Central Front of the Komiteng Rehiyon – Panay.
According to 12IB commander Lieutenant Colonel Vicel Jan Garsuta, Giganto’s identity was confirmed by former rebels, who stated that he died from complications of an untreated illness.
“Actually, gusto na niyang bumaba para magpagamot pero pinigilan at ng namatay inilibing nila without informing his family,” said Garsuta.
Meanwhile, Samson expressed condolences to Giganto’s family and sadness over his death.
“The abandonment of Giganto’s body by the rebels, without informing his family, highlights the group’s inhumane treatment of its members. His tragic death underscores the futility of armed struggle and the misery it brings,” Samson said.
He added: “Return to your government and family — those who truly care for you. This is your opportunity to embrace a longer, peaceful life, free from fear. The Enhanced-Comprehensive Local Integration Program (E-CLIP) can help you build a new and fulfilling life.”/PN
