ILOILO – More road-widening and bridge projects will be carried out in Western Visayas this year.
Some P12.9 billion will be poured into them, according to the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).
In 2016, the DPWH allocated P12.4 billion for such projects.
In Western Visayas, the DPWH has achieved its “physical target” last year — meaning, it has completed 80 percent of the total projects — Regional Director Wenceslao Leaño Jr. said on Tuesday.
Non-completed projects will be continued this year, he pointed out.
The 5th Engineering District in this province is one of the areas in the region with the highest fund allocation, Leaño disclosed.
Meanwhile P1.39 billion will be poured into tourism road projects — a convergence initiative between the DPWH and the Department of Tourism — in the region this year.
In 2016, P1.26-billion tourism roads were built in the region under the convergence program.
While funds are increasing, Leaño said they were having a problem looking for capable contractors.
“Our contractors are slow, considering the multiple projects they are undertaking,” the department official said.
Still, he said, they will strive to achieve their physical target (completing 80 percent of the projects) before the year ends. (PNA)
