ILOILO – To curb vehicular accidents, motorists need to be reminded when to slow down, according to the Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP).
In a resolution, it urged the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), local government units, barangays and Gov. Arthur Defensor Jr. to look into funding the installation of safety signs in areas deemed as “accident prone”.
“Kon may warning signs ma-remind ang mga motorists sa ila nga ma-slowdown or mabusina agud ma minimize or prevent ang aksidente,” according to Provincial Board member June Mondejar, chairman of the committee on public order and safety. He authored the SP resolution.
If the accident-prone area is on the national road, the DPWH has the obligation to put up the safety signs; the same goes with the provincial government on the provincial road; local government units on municipal roads; and the barangay council on barangay roads, the SP pointed out.
It cited the road in Barangay Amamaros, Pototan, the area where Passi City couple Merren and Emheel Pagtolon-an died following a collision with a dump truck on April 19. They were onboard an SUV, homebound.
Another accident-prone area was in Barangay Mambog, Oton town where motorcycle backrider John Marie Asuatigue died after crashing against another motorcycle on April 19.
The victim – resident of Santa Barbara town – was onboard a motorcycle driven by Joseph Caporal.
According to investigation, Caporal was driving fast which may have caused the accident./PN
