Mother saves daughter but drowns with another

BACOLOD City – Malou Tresa-Caloring tried to save two daughters from drowning but managed to rescue just one as she, too, drowned.

The drowning happened at the river in Barangay E. Lopez, Silay City, Negros Occidental where the Caloring family were on vacation, a police report stated.

Caloring, 34, and her daughters were residents of Barangay Caloring, Bais City, Negros Oriental, police said.

Officers did not identify the daughters but said both were minors, with the one who drowned aged 14 years old.

The daughters were at the riverbank at around 9 a.m. on Tuesday while Caloring was washing clothes nearby when the earth that the two were standing on caved, investigation showed.

The daughters fell into the river. Caloring jumped and saved one of the girls, and then went back to save the other one, but the latter two failed to return to the riverbank, said the police.

After she was retrieved, Caloring was rushed to the Teresita L. Jalandoni Provincial Hospital in Silay City, but the attending physician, Dr. Geronimo Sequiña, pronounced her “dead on arrival” at around 9:35 a.m.

The daughter who drowned was later recovered by an uncle, Rolando Tresa, at around 12 noon. She was taken to the same hospital where she was pronounced dead by Dr. Sonia Rojo at around 12:21 p.m.

The remains of the victims were at the Manapla Funeral Parlor in Silay City as of this writing./PN
