ILOILO City – Two cousins on board a newly bought motorcycle figured in a crash in Barangay Maribong, Lambunao, Iloilo. One of them died.
The motorcycle driver – 20-year-old Carlos Silva – died of head and body injuries. He was taken to the Calinog District Hospital where he was pronounced “dead on arrival.”
The motorcycle collided head-on into a pickup driven by Captain Zabelle Cañon of the Philippine Army’s 31st Infantry Division, police said.
Silva’s cousin Jimmy, 21, sustained injuries on the body. He was confined in the Western Visayas Medical Center in Mandurriao district.
The cousins were residents of Barangay Lampaya, Calinog.
A road-widening project was ongoing in the area where the crash happened at around 4 a.m. on Saturday, according to Police Officer 1 Rexan Larroza of the Lambunao police station.
“Based on our initial investigation, Silva was speeding and failed to control the motorcycle when they got near the pickup,” said Larroza. “They were thrown off the motorcycle, and Silva hit his head on the pavement.”
Cañon turned himself in to the Lambunao police station. He said he was willing to shoulder the victims’ hospital bills and the expenses for Silva’s burial./PN
