BACOLOD City – City Administrator John Orola was urged to transfer the fish vendors on Ballesteros Street to the Vendor’s Plaza.
The SangguniangPanlungsod reminded Orola that the Vendor’s Plaza is under his watch.
City Ordinance No. 286 series of 2001 established the Vendors’ Plaza.
Under Section 5 of the Market Code of Bacolod City, the city administrator shall “exercise direct and immediate supervision, administration and control over government-owned and -operated public markets and the personnel thereof.”
This provision was “expanded” to include the operation and management of the Vendors’ Plaza, the city council said in a resolution.
Councilor Sonya Verdeflor, author of the resolution, said the fish vendors’ temporary occupation of Ballesteros Street has resulted in complaints from the surrounding establishments.
Orola said he is considering the Vendor’s Plaza but stressed that the area needs to be developed first.
The Vendor’s Plaza needs comfort rooms and lights, and must be filled with people;some vendors are apprehensive because there are not that many buyers in the area, the councilor said.
Orola said they plan to make the Vendor’s Plaza attractive to people, including children, senior citizens and persons with disabilities.
It should be a place where parents can buy their needs while their children safely play or relax, the city administrator said./PN
