IBAJAY, Aklan – The Madia-as (or Madja-as) Mountain Range in Central Panay may be a site for scientific discoveries, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs)office-in-charge Dr. Renato Solidum Jr.
Solidum said scientists believe that the mountain range was from a seabed that rose a thousand years ago.
“The mountain range may have been formed from the collisions under the sea with the help of several fault lines – to include West Panay Fault and the Tablas Fault. Currently, the mountain range is growing,” Solidum added.
Mount Madia-as, a dormant volcano, is the highest peak in the island of Panay, measuring 2,117 meters above sea level.
The mountain range is located in Antique but it connects with the tributaries of the Aklan River.
“According to geologists, Panay was once connected to Palawan and mainland Asia. There are still numerous treasures in Madia-as that are yet to be explored and examined by scientists,” said Solidum.
Solidum, also the undersecretary for Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change of the Department of Science and Technology, was in this town on Tuesday for the inauguration of the Ibajay Seismic Station at the Aklan State University.
The establishment of the seismic station is part of Phivolcs’ initiative to expand the Philippine Seismic Network.
The station will boost the detectability of earthquake parameters generated by active earthquake sources in and around Aklan./PN
